Cost of Living in Bali: Monthly Budgets for 2026
The cost of living in Bali in 2026, item by item: rent, utilities, food, transport, staff and schools, plus three sample monthly budgets you can adjust.
The cost of living in Bali depends mostly on your housing, your children’s schooling and how you live. Summed from the itemized 2026 prices in this guide, indicative monthly totals run from about IDR 34.6–47.6 million for a single remote worker to IDR 76.2–111.0 million for a family with two children at Canggu Community School, before health insurance, visas and personal spending. This guide covers each cost, three sample budgets and ways to save.
What drives the cost of living in Bali?
Three things: where you live, whether your children attend an international school, and how often you eat out. In our sample budgets, rent is the largest item for a single person or a couple; for families, school fees can match or exceed it. The totals are sums of the itemized ranges below, not survey averages, so you can swap in your own numbers.
Housing: the biggest cost
These ranges come from our guide to long-term villa rental, which explains the method.
- Monthly: in October 2026, the few 1-bedroom villas listed on monthly or short contracts asked IDR 25–33 million a month, and 2- and 3-bedroom villas on such terms mostly asked IDR 22–40 million.
- Yearly (October 2026 asking prices): 2-bedroom villas asked about IDR 250–450 million a year in Canggu and Berawa and IDR 250–420 million in Umalas and Kerobokan. Three-bedroom villas asked about IDR 300–550 million across Canggu, Pererenan, Umalas and Kerobokan, with premium villas higher.
- Monthly vs yearly: monthly rentals often cost around 10–20% more per month, but yearly leases are usually paid in full upfront.
Compare current yearly villa rentals and monthly villa rentals.
Utilities and running costs
As of October 2026, PLN (the state electricity company) charges households by connection size (in VA, shown on the meter): IDR 1,444.70 per kWh at 1,300 and 2,200 VA and IDR 1,699.53 from 3,500 VA up, the size a villa usually needs to run a pool pump and several air-conditioners at once. At the higher rate, 100 kWh costs about IDR 170,000 before the regional electricity tax, and prepaid tokens carry a small admin fee.
- Drinking water: tap water is not safe to drink. A 19-liter refill bottle (galon) costs about IDR 20,000–35,000.
- Home internet: a 300 Mbps fiber plan costs about IDR 240,000–300,000 a month (October 2026), and 75–100 Mbps fiber plans were listed at IDR 233,100–279,000 a month in January 2026, some before VAT; whether fiber reaches a villa varies street by street. Starlink plans cost IDR 479,000–750,000 a month (February 2026), plus the hardware, where it is taking new customers.
- Mobile data: a 30-day prepaid plan with roughly 35–80 GB cost about IDR 100,000–150,000 in September 2026.
More in our guide to villa utilities and running costs.
Food and eating out
A dish such as nasi goreng at a warung (small local eatery) costs about IDR 20,000–30,000, and a western breakfast at a popular Canggu cafe about IDR 80,000–120,000.
A single person mixing warungs and cafes spends about IDR 5–7 million a month on food. Our sample budgets count that for each adult and half of it for each child. Imported and organic products raise the grocery bill quickly.
Getting around
- Fuel: as of October 2026 (unchanged since September), Pertalite (subsidized gasoline) costs IDR 10,000 a liter and Pertamax (RON 92) IDR 15,950, the same as in Java. Non-subsidized prices are reviewed monthly.
- Scooter: an automatic scooter with a helmet rents for about IDR 750,000–1 million a month. Moderate use takes about IDR 200,000 of fuel a month, which buys 20 liters of Pertalite.
- Ride-hailing: app-booked motorbike taxis follow a government fare band. In Bali (Zone I), the 2022 rules set IDR 2,000–2,500 per km and a minimum fare of IDR 8,000–10,000 for the first 4 km; these fares were unchanged as of July 2026. Premium services are priced freely.
- Car: we found no reliable 2026 price for renting a car by the month, so ask for quotes, and for a car with driver agree what the price covers.
Household staff and the minimum wage
The 2026 regency minimum wage (UMK, upah minimum kabupaten) is IDR 3,791,002.57 a month in Badung (Canggu, Pererenan, Umalas) and IDR 3,287,678.87 in Tabanan (Kedungu, Kediri). Set by the Governor of Bali and in force since 1 January 2026, it is the legal minimum wage for employees of businesses; household staff fall under separate rules.
For household staff, Law 2/2026 on the Protection of Domestic Workers, passed in April 2026, applies. It requires a written work agreement but sets no minimum wage, so pay is agreed between employer and worker. Rules on social security are to follow in a government regulation. The UMK is a sensible reference point for a full-time wage. If the rent includes cleaning or garden care, check in the lease who employs those staff.
Health insurance and healthcare
The sample budgets leave health insurance out, because premiums are priced individually. They depend on your age and health history, the deductible, outpatient cover, the area of cover (adding the US costs extra), and evacuation and maternity cover.
For scale, travel medical plans for remote workers were advertised in October 2026 from about USD 63 per four weeks for adults under 40, but can exclude pre-existing conditions, maternity and cancer treatment. A fuller plan of this kind costs USD 177.50 a month at that age. See also our guide to healthcare and hospitals in Bali.
International school fees
Canggu Community School’s fees for 2026–27:
| Year level | Tuition per year |
|---|---|
| Early Years (preschool–reception) | IDR 117 million |
| Years 1–6 | IDR 162–173 million |
| Years 7–11 | IDR 214–261 million |
| IB Diploma (Years 12–13) | IDR 272 million |
Add annual levies (capital IDR 21.5–26 million, materials IDR 8.5–13.5 million), a one-off application fee of IDR 2.5 million, registration of IDR 17 million for the first child (IDR 14 million per sibling) and a refundable deposit of IDR 25–50 million. Discounts apply for siblings and for paying the year at once.
Fees differ widely between schools. For 2026–27, tuition at ProEd Global School’s Umalas campus runs from IDR 92.4 million (Nursery) to IDR 202.65 million (Years 9–13), and at the Lycée Français de Bali from IDR 58.9 million to IDR 156.9 million, plus registration fees and levies or annual fees. See our guide to international schools in southwest Bali.
Visas and admin
- Visa on arrival: IDR 500,000 for 30 days, extendable once for the same fee (August 2026). An increase to IDR 750,000 online and IDR 1 million at the airport was announced that month.
- Tourist levy: foreign tourists pay IDR 150,000 each time they enter Bali (2025 rules); KITAS and KITAP (stay permit) holders are exempt.
- Remote worker visa (E33G): the government cost was USD 150 plus IDR 2.7 million in 2024.

Assumptions:
- Single remote worker: a 1-bedroom villa on a monthly rental at October 2026 asking rents; 300–600 kWh a month; four galons; one phone plan; one scooter with fuel; coworking and gym or yoga memberships.
- Couple: a 2-bedroom villa on a yearly lease of IDR 250–450 million, shown per month; 500–900 kWh; eight galons; two phone plans; two scooters with fuel; two gym or yoga memberships; working from home.
- Family: a 3-bedroom villa on a yearly lease of IDR 300–550 million; 900–1,500 kWh; 12 galons; two phone plans; two scooters with fuel (a rented car comes on top); food at IDR 5–7 million for each adult and half that for each child; no household help up to one full-time helper paid the Badung UMK; two children in Years 1–5 at Canggu Community School (2026–27 tuition and annual levies). Without school fees, the total is IDR 44.1–77.0 million.
- All columns: electricity at IDR 1,699.53 per kWh before the regional tax; internet from the cheapest fiber list price (before VAT) to Starlink Residential (hardware extra); the kWh figures are our assumptions, not measured averages. Not included: health insurance, visas, flights, deposits, one-off school fees, mains water, cooking gas, garbage collection, pool and garden care if the rent does not cover them, banjar (village) contributions and personal spending.

Ways to save
- Rent yearly once you know the area: monthly rentals often cost around 10–20% more.
- Consider a room. A room in a guesthouse or a shared house costs far less than a whole villa.
- Eat local. A warung dish costs a fraction of a cafe breakfast.
- Go easy on the air-conditioning, a main driver of the electricity bill. Below 3,500 VA, the rate per kWh is also about 15% lower.
- Compare galon prices: refill depots, branded bottles and delivery cost different amounts.
- Compare schools, and ask about sibling and annual-payment discounts.
How costs differ by area
Rent makes the difference. Fuel prices and the ride-hailing fare band are the same across Bali, and the minimum wage is lower in Tabanan than in Badung.
- Canggu and Berawa: typically the highest rents. In October 2026, 3-bedroom villas here asked IDR 330–480 million a year, with one premium villa at about IDR 720 million, while 2-bedroom rents were similar to Umalas and Kerobokan.
- Pererenan and Umalas: three-bedroom villas in Umalas and Kerobokan asked IDR 300–360 million a year in October 2026, but the few in Pererenan asked IDR 330–550 million, so quieter is not always cheaper.
- Kedungu, Kediri and other Tabanan villages: too few listings with clear prices for a range, so do not assume they are cheaper, and budget for more driving to Canggu’s services.

Frequently asked questions
Is Bali cheap to live in?
It depends on how you live. A warung dish costs roughly IDR 20,000–30,000 and a liter of Pertalite IDR 10,000, but villa rents in Canggu and international school fees are high. Housing and schooling decide whether Bali feels cheap.
How much do you need per month to live in Canggu?
For a single remote worker living in the Canggu area in a 1-bedroom villa on a monthly rental, our sample budget comes to about IDR 34.6–47.6 million a month in 2026, before health insurance and visas. Rent is the largest part: in October 2026, the few 1-bedroom villas listed on monthly or short contracts asked IDR 25–33 million a month. A room, a simpler villa or a yearly lease can bring this down, and the rent you agree can be lower than the asking price.
How much does a family need to live in Bali?
Our sample family of four, in a 3-bedroom villa with two children at Canggu Community School, comes to about IDR 76.2–111.0 million a month, including IDR 32.1–34.0 million of school fees (tuition and annual levies, before discounts). Fees differ widely between schools. Without school fees, it is IDR 44.1–77.0 million. Health insurance comes on top.
Is it cheaper to rent a villa yearly than monthly?
Usually, yes. Monthly rentals often cost around 10–20% more per month, though the gap varies by villa and season. Yearly leases are usually paid in full upfront, so compare the yearly price with twelve times the monthly price.
What is the minimum wage in Bali in 2026?
It depends on the regency. From 1 January 2026, the monthly minimum wage (UMK) is IDR 3,791,002.57 in Badung, which includes Canggu, and IDR 3,287,678.87 in Tabanan. Household staff fall under the 2026 domestic workers law (Law 2/2026), which leaves pay to a written agreement.
